Hailed by The New York Times as “a jaunty, vibrantly
scored canvas,” and “with a lucid, economical lyricism,” Chinese composer Shen
Yiwen’s music has been commissioned and performed by the Albany, American,
Beijing Symphony Orchestras, Da Capo Chamber Players, Colorado String
Quartet, Talea Ensemble, and the Music From China Ensemble, among
others. His music
has earned awards and recognition from the Minnesota Orchestra's Composers Institute, the Albany Symphony's
Composer to Center Stage Competition, Chinese National Composition Competition,
Chinese Golden Bell Award, and Distinguished Achievement of the Year in Music
Composition in Shanghai.
Highlights of the 2010/2011 season include
premiere of his Violin Concerto by the American Symphony Orchestra, premiere of
an orchestral piece that incorporates a scene from Shakespeare’s A Midsummer
Night’s Dream by the Albany
Symphony Orchestra, premiere of his Clarinet Concerto by the Beijing Symphony
Orchestra, and his Carnegie Hall debut with premiere of a song cycle commissioned
by the Carnegie Hall. Upcoming projects include an orchestral piece,
commissioned by the Changchun Film Orchestra, and a work commissioned by the
Bard Conservatory Orchestra for its first international tour to China in June
2012.
Now a master student of Samuel Adler at The
Juilliard School, Mr. Shen was one of the first graduates from the Bard College
Conservatory of Music, earning both a Bachelor of Music in Composition under
Joan Tower and George Tsontakis, and a Bachelor of Arts in German Studies. As an active pianist, he frequently
plays with the New Juilliard Ensemble and the Axiom Ensemble.
